For the month of May, we’ll take a brief look at 31 wise sayings from Proverbs 11, that’s one proverb a day…
Anyone trusting in his riches will fall, but the righteous will flourish like foliage.
Proverbs 11:28, Christian Standard Bible
The Bible issues many warnings about wealth. It never says that money or wealth itself are evil things, but it’s clear that money and wealth can easily take our eyes off God.
Wealth is a poor god. It is untrustworthy. One day it is there, then there is a hiccup in the economy and it’s not as valuable as it once was. This is why Solomon warned not to trust in riches. When wealth has our trust, it becomes the ultimate object of our happiness but it will not bear us under that weight.
Instead, we trust in God. That, after all, is how we become righteous. And the “righteous will flourish.” The righteous find joy and eternal riches in God, the one who forever sustains. And by refocusing our hearts onto God, we are able to find joy whether we have or have not.
