Proverbs 11:26 (a proverb a day)

For the month of May, we’ll take a brief look at 31 wise sayings from Proverbs 11, that’s one proverb a day…

People will curse anyone who hoards grain, but a blessing will come to the one who sells it.

Proverbs 11:26, Christian Standard Bible

In the pandemic we have been in, we have seen the result of panic hoarding. Several weeks went by where you were hard pressed to find something like toilet paper on store shelves. While some of this was done by people who wanted to profit off other’s fears, a lot of it was motivated by fear itself.

But imagine if companies and stores withheld toilet paper because of greed? That’s the person the first half of Proverbs 11:26 describes. And we are warned not to be like that person.

Hoarding is the opposite of the Christian’s call. As we’ve seen, we’re to be people of generosity because we are children of a generous God–a God who lavishes us with his grace (Ephesians 1:7-8). First John 3:17 even warns us that if we have the means and see another person in need and then withhold help, we lack the love of God.

Hoarding leads no place good. The blessing comes from following Jesus’ footsteps and freely give as we have freely received.
