This proverb has a colorful way to remind us, like many of the proverbs do, that character matters.
Society is often obsessed with attractiveness. Just look at how things are advertised and marketed. We can be lulled into the lie that how one looks is a supreme trait. This is not to discount true beauty. Ecclesiastes 3:11 reminds us that God even makes everything beautiful in its time.
Yet, true attractiveness starts with the heart, the inward beauty.
A person who fits society’s definition of great outward beauty, yet is bitter, mean, or spiteful, is not really attractive at all. They could also be rich, powerful, or famous; yet, if the character is lacking then it is wasted.
Pursue godly character in Christ above all else.
