Proverbs 11:9 (a proverb a day)

For the month of May, we’ll take a brief look at 31 wise sayings from Proverbs 11, that’s one proverb a day…

With his mouth the ungodly destroys his neighbor, but through knowledge the righteous are rescued.

Proverbs 11:9, Christian Standard Bible

The Proverbs say much about the power of words. Words can build up and they can tear down. We see this on full display in the age of social media. What we post online has the power to hurt or the power to encourage.

The book of James says the tongue is hard to control. That includes what we type with our fingers as well. Even what we share can damage someone’s character.

We should be careful to speak and type only what is true. Along with that, we should be known most for speaking and typing what is encouraging. Good character will ultimately rescue, even from false accusation; if not before the court of man then before the court of God. Yet, we should guard our words carefully so we do not, intentionally or unintentionally, destroy our neighbor.
