For the month of May, we’ll take a brief look at 31 wise sayings from Proverbs 11, that’s one proverb a day…
The righteousness of the blameless clears his path, but the wicked person will fall because of his wickedness.
Proverbs 11:5, Christian Standard Bible
The Bible tells us that life is like a journey or a race. Hebrews 12 even cautions that we need to lay aside the sin that seeks to trip us up. That’s the same idea that Solomon had in mind here.
We journey on the path of life that has its ups and downs, but it’s how we respond to temptations that determines whether we will stumble and fall. In Christ, we have perfect righteousness because he has given us his. Yet, we live in an in between time where we are not yet fully in possession of that righteousness.
It’s ours and guaranteed but old sins still sometimes trip us. For those without Christ, a life of sin will ultimately be their downfall. No matter how good they have it in this life, they will not stand in judgment. For those with Christ, as we keep our eyes on him, then the path before us remains clear. When we remove our eyes, we risk the stumble.
Fortunately, though grace, God picks us back up and sets us on our way again. But we can avoid the grief and pain of our stumbles by keeping focused on Jesus and the clear path his righteousness gives.
