For the month of May, we’ll take a brief look at 31 wise sayings from Proverbs 11, that’s one proverb a day…
When arrogance comes, disgrace follows, but with humility comes wisdom.
Proverbs 11:2, Christian Standard Bible
Pride comes before a fall. That’s another way of stating the first part of this proverb. Why is that? Because pride leads us to think we have all the answers. Arrogance causes us to believe our way is best and not see the potential pitfalls. The book of Proverbs is filled with advice that the wise seek the council of others.
These others aren’t simply “yes men”. Humility leads to wisdom because humility realizes we don’t have all the answers, we don’t see all the potential negatives, and we don’t need a bunch of people yessing our poor choices.
Humility listens, even to those who disagree with us or who have a different way. Listening doesn’t mean that we always follow their advice, but we at least consider it and try to look at things from all the different angles. Humility, especially, looks to God as the source of all wisdom and considers and obeys what his word says above all.
We need humility. The world needs more humble people.
