For the month of May, we’ll take a brief look at 31 wise sayings from Proverbs 11, that’s one proverb a day…
Dishonest scales are detestable to the Lord, but an accurate weight is his delight.
Proverbs 11:1, Christian Standard Bible
We might look at a verse like this and think, “That’s nice, but what does it have to do with me?” After all, we don’t use scales with weights for daily business like some did in Solomon’s day. Some in the market place would use trick scales or weights that didn’t match their labels in order to swindle others and make a bigger profit for themselves.
The point, then, for us is this: We should be honest in our dealings with others. Old Testament and New, one of the “greatest commands” of Scripture is to love our neighbor. To deal dishonestly is unloving, and to do so as we claim to be God’s people is dishonoring to him.
So, as God is truth and we are to be people of truth in Christ, let us deal honestly with others.
